BERNER TO SIT OUT ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONALS
CRETE, Illinois, July 3, 2008:
Pete Berner currently sits fifth in the Nitro Jam Pro Stock points
standings, and he recently had a difficult decision to make concerning his run
for the Championship. As we near the halfway point of the season, the points
battle is tightening and the Championship chase is growing in intensity. In a
year where gas prices have soared to all-time highs and people everywhere are
feeling the effects of economic downfall, it is becoming increasingly difficult
for racers to be competitive on a national and international level.
The
fifth stop on the IHRA Nitro Jam tour lands in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, which
for many racers is a 40+ hour drive, costing thousands in fuel alone. This
financial burden is prohibiting some racers from attending the event, even those
currently vying for the '08 Championship. Berner and the Quarter-Max.com team
have chosen to sit out the Rocky Mountain Nationals in order to save costs for
the season and provide an equal championship shot for all Pro Stock racers.
"We
will really miss attending this event," states Berner. "The fans and staff at
the Castrol Raceway Park are great and it's a wonderful place to race. But when
it comes down to the World Finals in Rockingham, I don't want the Championship
to be decided based on who had the financial means to travel and who did not. I
wouldn't feel right about winning it that way. We're in a great points battle
right now and I hope to see that continue up to the end, instead of half the
field gaining a significant advantage after this race. I think this
Quarter-Max.com team has made the best decision in sitting this one
out."
Berner will take advantage of this time off to test the Quarter-Max.com
Pontiac GXP and continue research on his engine program.

Time to turn the page for
Coughlin
NORWALK, Ohio (June 29) -- Reigning series champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. had
high hopes for this weekend's NHRA race in his home state of Ohio. In the end,
Coughlin's exceptionally fast racecar didn't carry him as far as he would have
liked, as the 52-time national event winner re-learned the lesson that the best
car doesn't always win in drag racing.
"This was a rough weekend, no doubt," Coughlin said. "The exciting thing is
we have a great racecar on our hands with this JEGS.com Chevrolet Cobalt we were
the quickest or second quickest of every round we raced. I just didn't do my job
as a driver."

Edwards Qualifies Top Half In
Norwalk
With the shorten qualifying, Mike Edwards laid down to
consistent 6.74s to grab the No. 8 spot heading into Sunday's eliminations at
the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. Though he has lane
choice for the all-important opening round, it is who is in the other lane that
won't let Edwards sleep through the night.
He drew his biggest nemesis
in the class, multi-time POWERade champion Greg Anderson, who qualified
five-thousandths slower than Edwards. "Greg has really had my number, and I know
it needs to change soon," Edwards added. "Heck, he got the best of me in the
semifinals last week in Englishtown and I know our Penhall/Young Life Pontiac
GXP is going to get that win light in the first round. It has to
happen."
The run has been a long one since Edwards bested Anderson in
NHRA eliminations. The last round victory came Sept. 15, 2002 at the Reading
national event when Edwards stopped Anderson in the second round. Since that
time, Anderson has collected 22 straight round wins over the course of the
nearly six-year stranglehold.
"Racers always talk about you can lose in
many different ways, and I think I have done every one against Greg," Edwards
joked. "From red-lights, to the transmission popping out of gear, and you name
it has been how I came up short. That book is full, it is time to start writing
chapters about how I beat Greg."
